Volcano Fun

                        V is for Volcano

Well I have been trying to tie a craft into learning the site of the Alphabet and my son is HOOKED on doing the baking soda and vinegar. I think we go thru at least 4 small things of baking soda a week and always have a gallon of vinegar on hand.

Mr. Science is his new name always wanting to mix something up, must be the boy in him. But the funny thing is he doesn't like to get his hands messy unless it is cooking related and sometimes not even then.

So here is our home made Volcano:

Materials:
paper mache....bought from Micheal's, was a mix that you just add water
small tray
small cup

Baking soda
Vinegar

paint if you want to paint it.....we didn't

How to do:
Mix paper mache like it tells you. Then I just put the small cup in the center of the tray and formed the Volcano.
My son added the rocks and cut pieces off the bushes outside.
Then let it sit in the sun for 1-2 days til dry. Ours was alittle damp at the bottom but my son kept talking about doing the Volcano so I gave in.....3 yr old

Then to make Volcano erupt you need baking soda, vinegar and we added red food coloring for the lava.

Mixing the paper mache and warm water together.

Forming the Volcano

As you can see momma is doing the messy work

Ok I will help but with the spoon.....not touching that mess

Milk painting

Fun with milk and food coloring

Well the weather was so nice today thought we would paint outside. So we went out on the deck and enjoyed the fresh air. Never thought this would be a BIG hit, but my 3yr old loves this. When he added the drops of food coloring and then mixed with the chopstick he said " Mommy look I made a pretty rainbow" was too cute.

Materials:
Milk.....everyone has that in their house
Food coloring
I used throw away tins from Dollar Tree.....2 for $1.00, could use a bowl or even a tray.

As you can see he likes this.

He was so into it.

Crystal Egg Science craft

Make your own crystal egg science. Kids will think it is neat and looks so pretty hanging in the window.

Materials:
pipe cleaners
boiling water (fill up your jar)
glass mason jar
yarn
borax laundry soap
pencil

How to do it:

Form your pipe clean to whatever shape you would like. Then tie some yarn around the top, hanging it from a pen or pencil. Heat 3 cups water up in the microwave pour into mason jar, then add 1 cup of borax laundry soap in the boiling water, stir for couple minutes. After it is dissolved place the pipe clean design into the water mixture. Let it sit for 3-4 hours or over night. Once it has sat the crystals will form.

This is great for kids to work their fine motor skills using the pipe cleaners to make shapes.

Making words with paint samples

I made a matching game with the paint samples and my preschooler wanted to help. Didn't think he would get into it as much as he did. So we went back to Home Depot and got more samples to make words.

Great for them to do so we started with his name. He put the stickers on the samples, then placed them on the clear laminate and cut them out. This is a GREAT fine motor skill for the kids.

Materials:
Paint samples
Stickers
Clear laminate

Putting the letter stickers on the paint samples

Look my name

Cutting them out of the laminate

Make your own Alphabet matching game

                       ABC learning game

My preschooler is all into playing games. When we were in Home Depot the other day I picked up the Mickey Mouse shaped paint samples and we turned it into a game.

Picked up 52 of them you need at least 2 colors of each, I used a couple of the colors twice. Then I use the ABC stickers I have on hand from scrap booking. I also laminated mine so they will last longer. You can use clear laminate.

Materials:
Paint samples
Alphabet stickers
Clear laminate

J helping cut the cards out of the laminate

Matching game all ready to play.....then when the kids get older can be a memory game

We love learning though play so be sure to check back to see what we are up to.

Sensory Play with Cloud dough

Today we had some nice Spring weather so I took the sensory table out. We put flour and baby oil in it and mixed it together making Cloud dough. The kids had a blast. We also had some friends over for a play date, they played for hours.

Materials:
Flour
Baby oil
Measuring cup
Add your fun toys to play kitchen

I mixed 8-9 cups of flour and 2 cups of oil, but you can mix as muh together as you want. It's a neat feel alittle like pizza dough just not as wet feeling, has a more dry feel. I have to say the baby oil made the flour smell good to.

Putting the flour in the bucket

More flour

Measuring a cup of baby oil

Mixing it all together

Baking a cake

Having a blast
